The technological development achieved in the 21st century from the internet, the expansion of mobile technology and the use of WhatsApp, the latter as an instant messaging application, facilitate access to information and communication from anywhere and at any time of people's lives. Given this reality, educational sciences and Higher Education Institutions, hereinafter (HEIs), are not left aside, they perform analyses and evaluate impacts of virtual environments in training processes; however, studies on the phenomenon of instant messaging on WhatsApp from a sociolinguistic perspective are scarce, in general, they are focused on the advantages and psycho-pedagogical impact.
Instant messaging represents a methodological opportunity in Higher Education for being the level where it has been most used for pedagogical purposes, there it is characterized by the fluidity and effectiveness in communication, the exchange of information from anywhere and at any time (Suarez, 2018); this messaging helps the development of oral competence in a second language (Andújar-Vaca and Cruz-Martínez, 2017) and is appreciated as a formative strategy for the construction of knowledge between groups (Padrón, 2013), as well as a possibility of communication by text, video, photography and audio, which results in a positioning to bring students and teachers much closer.
